accommodation and facilities

camping – the terraces make perfect flat camping areas, with olive trees for shade and the new upper camping area has space for tents in among native trees and shrubs. You need to bring or arrange to borrow camping gear, including a tent, sleeping bag, mattress, and a torch. here is a full list of what to bring so you don’t have to write one! For retreats you ONLY need to bring a sleeping bag.

structures – the original stone masia is living and storage space for long-term residents. The main kitchen is an outdoor kitchen where we prepare food during the summer months.  The outside dining/workshop area is under the shade in our geodesic dome with seating for up to 30 people. the tipee is usually used to host workshop leaders. The new house has a floor and 2 out of three doors! It is cool during the summer for workshops / eating / siestas / sometimes people can sleep in here too.

electricity : during events and courses longer than a weekend, electricity is provided from our solar system and charging mobile phones and laptops from a car charger is possible, although there may not be access to charger every day. Use of normal electrical appliances is not possible. For any event less than 48 hours there is no electricity on site. There is always the possibility of charging at the bar in town.

Toilets and Showers – Help the land by pooing and peeing separately !! All toilets and most wash areas are situated away from the main areas.

poo toilets:  There are two compost toilets which are dry toilets and allow us to produce high quality compost from the faeces! Instead of flushing you throw ash or earth over your doings. You can throw toilet paper in the toilets and remember to use the anti-bacterial hand gel provided after using the bathroom!

pee toilet: If you only need to wee you can go anywhere – away from the main areas. This is very good for the soil :). Girls have an outdoor “wee toilet” which is in a private place and with paper and a bin.

wash areas: The under cover wash area is next to one of the toilets where you can use a basin and a pump shower to wash your hands, face or body. There are two outdoor wash areas near the camping areas. All the water we use at the moment has to be hauled in from town, so we have to use water carefully. There is no hot water – at the end of the day it is warm from the sun though!

water: all drinking water is collected at nearby towns from the drinking fountain. There is chlorinated water on site for washing and showering, but at the moment this has to be brought in from town when we need a refill.

rubbish and recycling:   black bags : general rubbish, yellow bags : cans, plastic, tetrabric, green bags : glass, blue bags : paper and card, organic waste : in the brown bin and then into our “Zaï” system.

bicylces and car : the use of the bicylcles on site is possible, but always speak to long-term volunteers beforehand. The car is for shopping and any logistic needs. If you want to take a personal trip speak to the others on site!

local services in Calaceite: the petrol station is open till 3pm sundays and 11pm other days. La Cantonada (opposite the bus stop) is always open for sandwiches and cañas. the touristy shop on the main road (near the turn off to Valderrobres) is almost always open and sells overpriced food and local specialities. there are several grocery/souvenir shops and a supermarket, but most shops are closed sat pm and sunday, and all of them close for lunch from 2 till 5.

  1. For a phone charger I think there’s an easy configuration with a small 12v panel, a 12v battery and an unknown bit of kit that gives you a plug… (my friend had one!)
